Just fantastic stuff you’ve documented here. I stumbled across ONTHEAIR while searching for any audio of the Eagle from the 80’s when it was a CHS station. Obviously the Kidd Kraddick era. Also searching for more Y95 and Q102 audio, tapes, etc from the mid to late 80’s. Again great stuff.
Thanks, Robert, for the nice words. I was a KEGL P1 in high school in the 1980s -- still have some more airchecks to convert over time. On the index page - https://overtheair.substack.com/p/aircheck-index - you can search in the table (enter KEGL, Dallas, KHYI, etc.) to see the other airchecks I have put up.
Hi Chip I’m listening to the eagle 97 audio from 1982 I think it may be from 1983 actually because Beat it wasn’t released until 83 same with the Berlin song
Hi Jen, thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment. I tried to see if I could validate the date -- and I believe it is actually correct from being from December 1982.
Unfortunately, you cannot attach screenshots to comments, but if you go to:
...that is a scanned copy of Radio & Records from December 17 1982. On page 55 (CHR playlists from around the US), KEGL's is in the upper right for that week. Michael Jackson's "Beat It" (or I guess "Beet It" as they spelled it...) is at #31 on KEGL's playlist. And Berlin's "Sex" is at the bottom, along with Modern English also on this aircheck. Although as singles, they look like they were released in early '83, KEGL did have them spinning in December 1982.
The rest KEGL's playlist from that 12/17/82 edition also aligns with the aircheck -- "Maneater," "I Know There's Something Going On," "Goody Two Shoes," "Hungary Like The Wolf," "You Got Lucky," "Industrial Disease," "On The Loose," etc. The Saga and Dire Straits track are mentioned on air as "new," which would also align it.
Ok and thanks for these I grew up in DFW so it’s cool to hear these 80s airchecks as someone who was born in the 80s it’s still weird to me that the eagle used to be a top 40 station-Jen

Thanks Chip. Yes The Eagle was definitely untouchable from about 84-88.
