X Marks The Spot: WXGT 92.3 "92X" Columbus OH
With the WXGT calls returning to the market, let's re-listen to the previous WXGT
Yesterday, the FCC granted WWCD 1580 Columbus’s request to change call letters to WXGT starting on February 1. WWCD, along with its FM translator W225CS 92.9, currently run a modern rock format branded as “CD 92.9,” the third incarnation of the format, brand, and calls in the market that started originally in 1990 on what is today’s classical WOSA 101.1, now owned by Ohio State. Reports are that the owners of the brand will move it online only at the end of January, thus the new call letters to come.
The call letters are better known from its time on the 92.3 facility, that is presently country WCOL-FM. 92.3 was WCOL-FM since its sign on until the later 1970s when it took the WXGT calls. During the 1980s and until its end in late 1990, WXGT ran a top 40 format as “92X.” In late 1990, it changed calls back to WCOL-FM, running oldies for a few years, and then a format change to the present day country format.
In honor of the old call letters coming back, let’s re-visit the old 92X with two airchecks that musically are quite different. The first aircheck from 1987 has quite a bit of dance and rhythmic lean; while the second aircheck from 1990 is during its “rock 40” days on the other end of the spectrum as a rock-leaning top 40.
