Radio This Week Back Then #69: May 18-24
D/FW CHRs KZPS "Z92.5" and KTKS "Kiss 106FM" counting down the hits, from 18 May 1986.
What was on the radio this week…back then. This is a weekly visit of radio audio from this week in past years for those that enjoy radio history, those working in radio looking for promotional ideas, or stations looking to re-find lost audio of their heritage. If you enjoy these weekly audio rewinds, they take a lot of time to put together, so please do me a favor, subscribe, and share and pass it on. Thank you! A searchable and sortable index of all the audio is located on the Aircheck Index page.
It has been a busy week with not much time to spend on this week’s newsletter, so it is a little lighter than usual.
This week features two CHR airchecks from Dallas/Fort Worth I made on a Sunday night this week back in 1986. Each one is counting down the hottest hits…

Top 40 KAFM “92 1/2 KAFM, This Week’s Hits” had just relaunched as KZPW KZPS “Z92.5, Your Power Station” three months before this aircheck — and the CHR format was a goner right after this aircheck as it shifted to AC/jazz right after. The Z92.5 brand was gone by the fall when KZPS flipped to classic hits “Classic Hits 92.5,” later evolving to classic rock. More about KZPS’ early days are in this previous edition.

This aircheck is the first part of KZPS’ weekly “Texas Top 20” countdown.

This aircheck is from the original 1984-1987 — and much less successful — version of “Kiss FM” on 106.1 in Dallas/Fort Worth. See RTWBT #41 for the background on KTKS and the first day of the second incarnation as KHKS, which signed on in 1992.
Aircheck
This aircheck is that night’s edition of KTKS’ nightly “Top 8 At 8” countdown. As for the WBAP reference by the DJ, WBAP 820 was still a country station at this time.
