What was on the radio this week…back then. This is a weekly visit of radio audio from this week in past years for those that enjoy radio history, those working in radio looking for promotional ideas, or stations looking to re-find lost audio of their heritage. If you enjoy these weekly audio rewinds, they take a lot of time to put together, so please do me a favor, subscribe, and share and pass it on. Thank you! A searchable and sortable index of all the audio is located on the Aircheck Index page.
This week:
Dallas/Fort Worth | AC KVIL-FM/AM (1991)
Philadelphia | rhythmic CHR WIOQ “Q102, the Beat of Philadelphia” and adult R&B WDAS-FM (1997)
Happy reading and listening!

About The Station
Aircheck
Of course, KVIL is best known from its heritage AC days. This 1991 aircheck is from legendary Ron Chapman’s AM drive show. Certainly in today’s environment, you would be hard pressed to find a morning show with such a large supporting cast. Full service news, airborne traffic from the “KVILelicopter,” listener calls, and Chapman…good stuff. Like any great station, listening to it told you a lot about what was going in and around the city. Dallasites from the 1980s will totally understand the reference of the surprise of Trinity Mills Blvd not being flooded under the I35E overpass after overnight heavy thunderstorms…

About The Station
WDAS-FM signed on in 1959 as the FM sister to heritage R&B outlet WDAS 1480. WDAS-FM moved to classical music before shifting to underground/progressive in April 1968. In March 1971, WDAS-FM shifted from progressive rock to “progressive soul.”1 It would evolve to disco and then to R&B when disco flamed out in 1980 and then later to its present day long-running adult R&B format.
Aircheck
This week’s aircheck comes from the same trip I recorded the WIOQ one above. Certainly, times have changed over the past quarter century where some of these songs have long disappeared from most adult R&B playlists.
